We have been planning our family vacation for a long time now on the premise that the school year would start at the normal time. Today I got the calendar for the new school year, and it's starting a week early. I have a kindergartner and a 2nd grader- this is a charter school, so they only go to school two days a week, which means they will only miss two days.
I am very upset about this. People are depending on us (we are visiting family friends), we have hotel reservations, we have been saving up. I would move the vacation up a week, but that is impossible because of a prior commitment that also can not be changed. What would you do? Cancel the vacation or miss the first two days of school? I feel incredibly guilty either way, and if we do miss the first two days, I don't even know how to excuse this.
what is more important?
if its only 2 days you should be fine.Tell them its a family thing that you need to be at!!!
best of luck to you!
I would just miss the first two days of school. this past spring, we were planning a trip and had made reservations and because of bad weather school closings, school was in session an extra week. my daughter took my grandson out two days early and off we went. School is very important, don't get me wrong, but when you put money down and make arrangements that can't be changed – well, they won't miss that much by missing two days.
I would take the trip. See if you can get in touch with the teachers of your children and explain the situation to them. Don't lie to them, but just tell them that this vacation has been on the books for a long time and you already have everything reserved. Tell them the kids are really excited to go and you had no idea school would be starting early this year.
Tell them that you didn't want them (the teachers) to think your kids wouldn't be there, and explain that it's only 2 days, and that as soon as they come back you will work hard to get them caught up.
In the first days of school there isn't a lot going on, I don't think so I think you'll be ok.
And there isn't a lot the teachers can do but at least you can be courteous enough to just give them a heads up. this will help you win favor with them. if the teachers are already going to be giving out assignments and you think your kids might work on them in the car ask for the work.
I wouldn't stress out about it too much though. you didn't know. but just talk to them, and be up-front with them. Be willing to compromise and I think you'll feel ok about it all in the end. I wouldn't sacrifice the trip, though.
Good luck, and I hope this all works out!!
Maybe ask the school when if the teachers happen to be working in the classroom. you could take the kids in early and show them the classroom and have them meet the teachers, than take your vacation.
Just remember the school and teachers are very busy and have no obligation to spend time or have everything picture perfect the week before school — but, I doubt anyone would mind if time allows. I'm sure they'd love to meet your kids.
miss the first 2 days of school. be thankful that it isnt 5 days like regular schools
Long-planned family vacation cuts into first week of school- what to do?
